Raj Yoga Horoscope Calculator: how it works

Raj yogas are specific, checkable planetary combinations. Either the lords of particular houses are related in a defined way, or they are not.

What a raj yoga is

A yoga is a defined combination of planetary placements. Raj yogas specifically involve the rulers of the angular houses — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, called kendras — and the trinal houses — the 1st, 5th and 9th, called trikonas. When a kendra lord and a trikona lord are associated, classical texts read authority and status.

Association means one of three things: the two planets sit in the same sign, they aspect each other mutually, or they occupy each other’s signs in an exchange.

Aspects follow fixed rules

Graha drishti
PlanetAspects the
All planets7th house from itself
Marsadditionally the 4th and 8th
Jupiteradditionally the 5th and 9th
Saturnadditionally the 3rd and 10th

These are the standard Parashari aspects. Because they are asymmetric — Jupiter aspects the 5th but nothing aspects Jupiter from the 5th — a mutual aspect requires checking both directions.

The main combinations

  • Dharma-Karmadhipati: the 9th and 10th lords associated. Considered the strongest raj yoga.
  • Kendra-Trikona: any angular lord associated with any trinal lord.
  • Gajakesari: Jupiter in an angle from the Moon — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from it.
  • Budhaditya: Sun and Mercury together, read for intellect.
  • Pancha Mahapurusha: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in its own or exaltation sign and in an angle from the ascendant.

Why an accurate birth time matters

The ascendant moves through a full sign roughly every two hours, and it determines which house every planet occupies. An error of an hour can shift the ascendant into the next sign, which changes every house lordship and therefore which yogas are detected at all.
