A sign with 30 or more Sarva bindus is traditionally treated as supportive; below 25 is treated as weak.
In an individual planet's row, 5 or more bindus in a sign is strong and 2 or fewer is weak.
Ashtakavarga & Shadbala Strength Calculator: how it works
Ashtakavarga assigns benefic points to each sign from eight reference positions. The totals are fixed, which makes the whole system checkable.
How the points are assigned
For each of the seven planets, classical texts specify which houses — counted from each of eight reference points — receive a benefic point. The eight references are the seven planets plus the ascendant. Summing across all eight gives that planet’s Bhinnashtakavarga, a score from 0 to 8 for every sign.
Adding the seven Bhinnashtakavarga charts together gives the Sarvashtakavarga, the combined strength of each sign.
The totals are invariant
This is a useful property. Any Ashtakavarga calculation that does not total 337 has applied the tables incorrectly, which makes the system self-checking in a way that most astrological calculations are not.
