Government Salary & In-Hand Pay Calculator: how it works
A central government pay slip is basic pay plus four or five predictable components, minus three deductions. Once you know which rate applies to your level and city, the whole thing is arithmetic.
What makes up your gross pay
Under the 7th CPC, your basic pay is a single cell in the pay matrix — a grid of 19 levels, each with up to 40 stages. Every allowance is then derived from that one number.
| Component | How it is calculated |
|---|---|
| Basic pay | A cell in the pay matrix for your level |
| Dearness allowance | A percentage of basic, revised twice yearly |
| House rent allowance | 30, 20 or 10 percent of basic by city class |
| Transport allowance | A flat amount by pay level and city, plus DA on it |
HRA depends on two things, not one
House rent allowance is set by your city classification, but the rate itself moves as DA rises. Most online calculators get this wrong by hardcoding a single set of rates.
| City class | DA below 25% | DA 25–50% | DA above 50% |
|---|---|---|---|
| X — major metros | 24% | 27% | 30% |
| Y — other large cities | 16% | 18% | 20% |
| Z — remaining places | 8% | 9% | 10% |
X class covers Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad. Y class covers most state capitals and larger district headquarters. Everywhere else is Z.
Transport allowance is banded by level
Transport allowance is not a single figure. It is banded by pay level, doubled in higher-TPTA cities, and DA is paid on top of it.
| Pay level | Higher TPTA city | Other city |
|---|---|---|
| Levels 1–2 (basic below ₹24,200) | ₹1,350 | ₹900 |
| Levels 1–2 (basic ₹24,200 or above) | ₹3,600 | ₹1,800 |
| Levels 3–8 | ₹3,600 | ₹1,800 |
| Level 9 and above | ₹7,200 | ₹3,600 |
