The Ishta Devata is derived through the Karakamsa — the navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka — and the 12th house from it.
The derivation
- Identify the Atmakaraka, the planet at the highest degree within its sign.
- Find its position in the navamsa, the ninefold divisional chart. That sign is the Karakamsa.
- Take the 12th house from the Karakamsa.
- A planet placed there indicates the deity; if empty, the lord of that sign is used.
The 12th house is chosen because in this system it signifies liberation and what lies beyond the self — hence the deity toward which the soul turns.
The navamsa
The navamsa divides each 30-degree sign into nine parts of 3°20′ each. Movable signs count from themselves, fixed signs from the 9th, and dual signs from the 5th — which reduces to a single formula: the navamsa sign is (sign × 9 + part) modulo 12.
