Channel and beam weights come from published section tables, not from a formula, because the profile is too complex to approximate usefully.

Why tables rather than formulas

A channel has a web, two tapered flanges, root radii and toe radii. Approximating it as rectangles is far less accurate than for an angle, so IS 808 tabulates the unit weight of every standard section directly.

Channel or beam?

  • Channels are asymmetric about the vertical axis, so they twist under load applied away from the shear centre.
  • Beams are symmetric and are the default for primary bending members.
  • Channels suit purlins, bracing and members fixed against a surface.
