Source: IS 808 table

ISA 50×50×5 is a standard rolled section, so the published IS 808 unit weight is used.

The geometric formula (2a − t) × t gives 3.729 kg/m for this size, about 1.9% light, because it ignores the root radius and toe fillets on a rolled angle.

L Angle & C Channel Steel Weight Calculator: how it works

The geometric formula for an angle section reads about 2 percent light against published values, because a rolled angle has fillets the formula ignores.

The geometric formula

Area = (2a − t) × t

a = leg length
t = thickness
The overlap at the heel is subtracted once

An equal angle is two rectangles meeting at a corner. Adding both legs double-counts the square where they overlap, which is why the expression subtracts one thickness.

Why published values are higher

For standard sizes, use the IS 808 table. The formula is for non-standard or fabricated sections where no tabulated value exists.

Frequently asked questions

Area equals (2 × leg − thickness) × thickness in mm², multiplied by density. For mild steel this gives kg/m directly when divided by 1000.
