MS Pipe & SS Pipe Weight Calculator: how it works

Pipe weight follows from the annulus area and the material density. The familiar 0.02466 constant is just that calculation done once for mild steel.

Where the formula comes from

A pipe is a hollow cylinder. Its cross-sectional area is the outer circle minus the inner one, which simplifies neatly.

Area = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) = π × t × (OD − t)

ID = OD − 2t, so the expression collapses to the simpler form

Weight per metre = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 kg/m

0.02466 = π × 7.85 g/cm³ ÷ 1000, for mild steel

Worked example

Worked example · 60.3 mm OD, 3.91 mm wall, 6 metres

Given

  • OD: 60.3 mm
  • Wall thickness: 3.91 mm
  • Length: 6 m
  • Material: mild steel

Working

  1. 1(60.3 − 3.91) × 3.91 = 220.5
  2. 2220.5 × 0.02466 = 5.44 kg/m
  3. 35.44 × 6 = 32.6 kg

Total weight: 32.6 kg per length

Practical notes

  • Nominal bore is not the same as outer diameter. A 50 NB pipe has an OD of 60.3 mm.
  • Mill tolerance on wall thickness is typically ±10 percent, so actual weight varies.
  • Galvanising adds roughly 3 to 5 percent to the weight.
  • Pipe is usually sold by weight, so this calculation is what you are billed on.

Weight per metre equals (OD − thickness) × thickness × 0.02466 for mild steel, where dimensions are in millimetres. Multiply by length for the total.
