The silver threshold is lower, so more people become liable. Scholars differ; many recommend silver.

How this is calculated

Nisab is 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver, valued at today's rate. Gold nisab here is ₹6,29,856 and silver nisab ₹53,888.

Zakat is due at 2.5% on net wealth held for one full lunar year (hawl) above the nisab.

Zakat & Gold Value Calculator India: how it works

Zakat is 2.5 percent of net wealth held for one lunar year above the nisab threshold. Which threshold you use changes who is liable.

The nisab threshold

BasisQuantityEffect
Gold87.48 gramsHigher threshold, fewer payers
Silver612.36 gramsLower threshold, more payers

The two thresholds were roughly equal in value when they were set, but the gold-to-silver price ratio has diverged enormously since. Today the silver nisab is a small fraction of the gold nisab in rupee terms.

What counts as zakatable wealth

  • Gold and silver, whether jewellery, coins or bullion.
  • Cash in hand and bank balances.
  • Investments: shares, mutual funds, fixed deposits.
  • Business stock in trade, valued at current selling price.
  • Money owed to you that you reasonably expect to recover.

Deduct debts falling due, then apply 2.5 percent to the balance if it exceeds the nisab.

What is generally excluded

  • Your primary residence and personal effects.
  • A vehicle used personally rather than for trade.
  • Business fixed assets — machinery, fittings — as opposed to stock.
  • Long-term debts not currently due.

Worked example

Worked example · 100g gold, ₹1,50,000 cash, silver nisab basis

Given

  • Gold: 100g at ₹7,200/g
  • Cash: ₹1,50,000
  • Silver rate: ₹88/g
  • Debts: nil

Working

  1. 1Gold value = 100 × 7,200 = ₹7,20,000
  2. 2Total wealth = 7,20,000 + 1,50,000 = ₹8,70,000
  3. 3Silver nisab = 612.36 × 88 = ₹53,888
  4. 4Above nisab, so zakat = 8,70,000 × 2.5%

Zakat payable: ₹21,750
