Indian Railways opens reservations a fixed number of days before the journey. Knowing the exact date matters when a train sells out in minutes.

The advance reservation period

The advance reservation period, or ARP, is the number of days before travel that booking opens. It is counted excluding the date of journey itself, and booking opens at 08:00 IST on that day for the general quota.

Booking on a competitive train
