How this is calculated

Metal value = 250.00 g × ₹88 × 0.925 = ₹20,350

Purity matters: 22K jewellery contains 91.6% gold, so the rate quoted for 999 fine metal must be scaled down. Making charges and GST are then added on top.

Silver & Gold Value Rate Calculator: how it works

The price you pay for jewellery is the metal value adjusted for purity, plus making charges, plus GST — and only the metal value comes back on resale.

Purity comes first

A quoted rate is for 999 fine metal. Jewellery is alloyed for durability, so the metal content is less than the weight suggests.

The full price build-up

Total = (Weight × Rate × Purity) + Making charges + Hallmarking + GST

Worked example · 250g silver at ₹88/g, 925 purity, 10 percent making

Given

  • Weight: 250g
  • Rate: ₹88/g for 999 fine
  • Purity: 925
  • Making: 10%
  • GST: 3%

Working

  1. 1Metal value = 250 × 88 × 0.925 = ₹20,350
  2. 2Making charges = 10% of 20,350 = ₹2,035
  3. 3Subtotal with hallmarking ₹45 = ₹22,430
  4. 4GST = 3% of 22,430 = ₹673

Total price: ₹23,103

What you get back on resale

This is why jewellery is a poor investment vehicle compared with coins, bars, sovereign gold bonds or ETFs, all of which carry far lower or no making charges.

Making charges vary widely

  • Plain designs: 6 to 10 percent, or a flat per-gram rate.
  • Intricate or branded designs: 15 to 25 percent and sometimes more.
  • Machine-made chains: often lower than handmade equivalents.
  • Making charges are almost always negotiable, particularly on larger purchases.
