GATE Marks & Score Calculator
Estimate GATE Score out of 1000 and qualifying status using raw marks, mean & standard deviation.
Published by IIT for your paper and category.
Also published with the results. Typically 70–85.
How this is calculated
S = 350 + (900 − 350) × (M − Mq) ÷ (Mt − Mq)
= 350 + 550 × (62.00 − 25.00) ÷ (80.00 − 25.00) = 720
Mt is the mean of the marks of the top 0.1% of candidates, published with each year's results. It is an input here rather than a fixed number, because it changes every year and with every paper.
GATE Marks & Score Calculator: how it works
The GATE score is a normalisation of your raw marks against the qualifying mark and the mean of the top 0.1 percent — both of which change every year and every paper.
The official formula
S = Sq + (St − Sq) × (M − Mq) ÷ (Mt − Mq)
- Sq = 350, the score at the qualifying mark
- St = 900, the score at the top 0.1% mean
- M = your marks out of 100
- Mq = qualifying mark for your category and paper
- Mt = mean marks of the top 0.1% of candidates
The formula maps the marks range between the qualifying mark and the top-0.1 percent mean onto the score range 350 to 900. This is what makes scores comparable across papers of differing difficulty.
Why Mt cannot be hardcoded
Both Mq and Mt appear in the official results and in the GATE information brochure for your paper. Take them from there.
Worked example
Worked example · 62 marks, qualifying 25, top-0.1% mean 80
Given
- Your marks: 62
- Mq: 25
- Mt: 80
Working
- 1S = 350 + (900 − 350) × (62 − 25) ÷ (80 − 25)
- 2= 350 + 550 × 37 ÷ 55
- 3= 350 + 370
GATE score: 720
