CAT Score & Percentile Predictor
Estimate overall CAT percentile from VARC, DILR, and QA raw marks out of 198.
How this is calculated
Most IIMs apply sectional percentile cut-offs in addition to the overall percentile, so a lopsided profile can fall short even at a strong total.
CAT Score & Percentile Predictor: how it works
CAT reports scaled scores and percentiles. Sectional percentiles matter as much as the overall figure, because most IIMs apply cut-offs to both.
Raw score, scaled score and percentile
- Raw score: 3 marks per correct answer, minus 1 for each wrong MCQ. Non-MCQ questions carry no penalty.
- Scaled score: raw scores normalised across the two or three slots to account for differing paper difficulty.
- Percentile: your position relative to all candidates, computed from the scaled score.
The paper has three sections — VARC, DILR and QA — each with its own scaled score and its own percentile, alongside the overall figures.
Why sectional percentiles matter
This is why preparation advice consistently favours shoring up your weakest section over pushing your strongest higher: the marginal return on your weak section is far greater.
Percentile compression at the top
The mapping from score to percentile is highly non-linear. Below the 90th percentile a few marks move you a percentile or two. Above the 99th, a single mark can move you several thousand ranks, because so many candidates are packed into a narrow scoring band.
