1/3 Negative Marking & Penalty Calculator
Calculate final score, accuracy percentage, and penalty loss for exams with 1/3 or 1/4 negative marking.
Is guessing worth it?
With a 1/3 penalty, a guess breaks even when you are right about 25% of the time.
On a four-option question a blind guess is right 25% of the time, so guessing is worth it on average — though eliminating even one option changes that.
1/3 Negative Marking & Penalty Calculator: how it works
Different examinations use different negative marking fractions, and the fraction determines exactly how confident you need to be before attempting a question.
Common penalty fractions
| Fraction | Used by | Break-even accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| 1/3 | UPSC, SSC, most state PSCs | 25% |
| 1/4 | JEE, NEET, CAT | 20% |
| 1/2 | Some banking and state exams | 33.3% |
| 1/5 | A few state examinations | 16.7% |
Net score = (Correct × Marks) − (Wrong × Marks × Fraction)
The break-even calculation
Attempting a question is worth it when the expected gain exceeds the expected loss. If p is your probability of being right and f is the penalty fraction, the attempt is worth making when p exceeds 1 ÷ (1 + 1/f).
Worked example · One-third penalty
Given
- Penalty fraction: 1/3
- Four options
Working
- 1Break-even p = 1 ÷ (1 + 3) = 0.25
- 2Blind guess on four options = 0.25
Exactly break-even — guessing neither gains nor loses on average
Worked example · One-quarter penalty
Given
- Penalty fraction: 1/4
- Four options
Working
- 1Break-even p = 1 ÷ (1 + 4) = 0.20
- 2Blind guess = 0.25, which exceeds 0.20
Guessing is positive on average — JEE and NEET reward attempting
What this means in practice
- With 1/4 marking, attempt everything. The arithmetic favours it even on a blind guess.
- With 1/3 marking, attempt anything where you can eliminate one option.
- With 1/2 marking, be genuinely selective — you need to be right a third of the time just to break even.
